Some ADU projects begin with a simple goal: create rental income or add more living space. Others become something much bigger.
This is the story of one of the most unique ADU projects we've had the privilege of building at Plus Home ADU.
A Vision Beyond Rental Income
When Paul contacted us about his property in Orange, California, he wasn't simply looking to build an Accessory Dwelling Unit. As a real estate professional and proud owner of a classic mid-century Eichler home, he had a very specific vision. His goal was to create additional rental income while preserving everything that makes Eichler homes so special—the clean architectural lines, open floor plans, floor-to-ceiling glass, and seamless connection between indoor and outdoor living.
For Paul, building an ADU wasn't just a real estate investment. It was about protecting the architectural identity of his home.
The Challenge
Eichler homes are among California's most recognizable residential designs. Their minimalist architecture and distinctive mid-century modern style have inspired generations of architects and homeowners. Adding a new structure to an Eichler property presents a unique challenge.
How do you build something new without making it look like an addition?
How do you respect the original architecture while creating a functional modern living space?
That became the question our team set out to answer.
Designing an ADU That Belonged
Rather than designing a standard detached ADU, we approached the project as if we were extending the original Eichler vision. Every design decision focused on harmony with the existing home.
The new ADU features:
Matching rooflines inspired by the original architecture
Floor-to-ceiling glass that maximizes natural light
Clean horizontal lines characteristic of mid-century modern design
Carefully selected materials that complement the existing home
A seamless indoor-outdoor connection
The goal wasn't to imitate the Eichler—it was to create an ADU that felt like it had always been part of the property.
More Than an ADU
The completed project achieved everything Paul had hoped for. The property now generates additional rental income while maintaining the architectural integrity that first attracted him to the home.
Perhaps even more rewarding, the project became recognized as the first Eichler-inspired ADU of its kind in California, demonstrating that thoughtful design can preserve architectural heritage while meeting today's housing needs.
For us, that recognition wasn't simply about being first. It was proof that homeowners don't have to choose between preserving character and creating opportunity.
Every ADU Has a Story
One of the things we enjoy most about designing ADUs is discovering the reason behind each project. Some families want to create a home for aging parents. Others are planning for adult children returning home. Many homeowners are looking to generate rental income or increase the long-term value of their property.
In Paul's case, the goal was to honor one of California's architectural icons while creating a smarter investment for the future. Every project begins with a different story. And every successful ADU begins by understanding that story before drawing the first line.
