How One Family Transformed Their Backyard Into a Lifestyle Investment

🎥 Watch the complete homeowner story here:

When most homeowners think about building an Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU), they usually have one goal in mind: creating rental income. For Bob and Angela, the vision was much bigger. They weren't simply looking to add another unit to their property. They wanted to create a space that reflected who they are, supported their financial goals, and enhanced the way they wanted to live for years to come. Their project in Fullerton became a perfect example of how thoughtful ADU design can completely transform a property—not just physically, but financially and emotionally as well.

A Home They Never Wanted to Leave

Bob and Angela loved their neighborhood. They had built a life in Fullerton, developed friendships, and created memories in their home. Like many California homeowners, however, they began feeling the pressure of rising mortgage payments and the increasing cost of living. Moving somewhere else wasn't the answer. Instead, they asked a different question:

How could they make their existing property work harder for their future?

That question led them to Plus Home ADU.

Looking Beyond Rental Income

Creating rental income was certainly one of their goals. An ADU would help offset mortgage expenses while increasing the long-term value of their property. But they also wanted the project to feel personal. Bob is a music teacher, and music has always been an important part of his life. He dreamed of having a dedicated studio where he could teach, create, and work without sacrificing space inside the family home. Instead of treating that idea as an afterthought, we made it part of the overall design.

Designing Around the Family's Lifestyle

Rather than building a traditional detached ADU, we designed a two-story backyard living solution that served multiple purposes. On the ground floor, we created a private music studio connected to the existing garage, giving Bob a dedicated creative space designed specifically for his profession. Above it, we designed a beautiful detached ADU featuring a private outdoor balcony that would become one of the home's defining features. The project wasn't simply about adding square footage. It was about creating spaces that supported the family's everyday life while also generating new opportunities for the future.

The Balcony That Made the Difference

Every project has one feature that homeowners fall in love with. For Angela, it was the balcony. Because the property is located near Disneyland, she imagined future tenants relaxing outside in the evening and watching the Disneyland fireworks from their own private outdoor space. It wasn't just another balcony. It became an experience. Sometimes the smallest design decisions become the ones that people remember the most.

More Than Financial Return

Today, the ADU provides additional rental income that helps support the family's mortgage. But the financial benefits tell only part of the story. The project also gave Bob a professional space where he can continue sharing his passion for music. It created an attractive living environment for future tenants. Most importantly, it allowed Bob and Angela to remain in the community they love without compromising their long-term financial goals. That's what thoughtful ADU design should accomplish. Not simply creating another unit—but creating a better way of living.

Every Family Has a Different Story

One of the most rewarding parts of designing ADUs is discovering that every homeowner has different priorities. Some families want to create housing for aging parents. Others are planning for adult children returning home. Many are focused on generating rental income. For Bob and Angela, the project became a combination of all those ideas. It supported their finances. It reflected their personalities. It respected their lifestyle. And it transformed their property into something that serves both the present and the future.

Designing Around People, Not Just Buildings

At Plus Home ADU, we believe the best ADUs begin with a conversation—not a floor plan. Every property has unique opportunities. Every homeowner has different goals. That's why we start by understanding how you want your property to improve your life before discussing design, permits, or construction. Because the best ADUs aren't simply built. They're designed around the people who will live with them.
